Pedagogical Documentation is rooted in the practice of reflection. It helps foster holistic development within children and provides opportunities for educators and families to collaborate and form responsive relationships. Understanding how children learn, is a fundamental practice for an ECE. It is essential to recognize that learning is a journey that ebbs and flows beyond just the exchange of information. It encompasses the whole being, including creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. Through the use of pedagogical documentation educators can gain valuable insight into the whole child.
While other tools of observation are valuable some only give insight to a moment with a child. Pedagogical documentation provides educators with a wider view of a child's learning, allowing us to capture their learning over time. In Ontario, the pedagogical framework, How Does Learning Happen? highlights the important role of making children's learning visible, collaborative reflection and continuous learning opportunities for both children and their educators.
Through the process of observation, documentation and reflection, ECEs and educators can identify learning opportunities and experiences to engage and foster inquiry-based learning opportunities. It has been my experience that I learn just as much or more than the children I care for through pedagogical documentation. It is important for me to always reflect on any experience I share with the children.
One key insight I have gained during my time as an educator is the ability to adapt, this allows me to embrace the moment and change what is not working. As Educators, we must remain focused on the ever-changing interests of the children. By staying perceptive to the needs of the children and being willing to adapt our learning approaches and strategies, we can continue to share exciting learning experiences that align with the needs of the individual child.
