My Learning Journey: Reflections of Growth

As an Early Childhood Education (ECE) student and an independent childcare provider (ICP), I am eager to share my learning journey. From completing assignments to gaining hands-on experience within the field, I have found insightful knowledge and understanding of Early Childhood Education. Through this portfolio and blog series, I aim to share both my academic and hands-on insights within the profession.

A Passion for Early Childhood Education

From the time I was a child, I have always had a deep interest in learning, teaching and child development. This sparked my interest in taking parenting and psychology classes in high school. Upon graduation, I contemplated pursing Early Childhood Education at Durham College, at the time in 2006 I embarked on a different educational journey, which ended in completing an Ontario Advanced Diploma in Advertising. The foundational skills I acquired, allow me to pursue my creative passions as well as sharing my love of art and design with children. Though the journey towards education wasn't a direct one, the life skills I have gained has laid a foundation and passion in helping my community.

In 2011, I took the step into reentering education by enrolling into the Early Childhood Education program at Niagara college. Finally finishing my pursue of an ECE diploma at Fleming College. With each placement and employment at various daycare centres, I found more joy and passion for childcare. I am grateful to have the experience in becoming a mother, and a childcare provider driving me to research about topics such as child development, neurodivergence, and attachments, providing me with a foundation to foster meaningful relationships. I have witnessed the powerful impact that relationships can have on children, their families and colleagues. Through these interactions, shared experiences and learning, our relationships are essential for quality childcare that supports holistic development.

An experience that I will never forget, is one of my placements I had at  Niagara College. Here I was in a toddler room in a daycare that was inside a retirement community. This was a such unique experience, the residents and the daycare often interacted, contributing to inter-generational bonds. This experience showed me the importance of relationships, in my blog posts on "Professional Practice: Embracing the Roles & Responsibilities" and "Meaningful Observations: Understanding the Importance," I share the dynamics of building relationships with children and families.

Through these reflections I recognize the significant role that Early Childhood Educators have when nurturing meaningful relationships and collaborative partnerships. I understand the importance of having transparent open communication to foster trust and unique and diverse perspectives with families. In addition, having collaborative relationships with colleagues can enrich the education experiences for children.

My journey in childcare is driven by the relationships I have made along the way, they are an important factors in continuing my practice, of reflection and professional growth. While I reflect, I recognize the importance of continual professional development, inclusive practices, and advocacy within the Early Childhood Education profession. They are the cornerstone of my growth as an educator influencing me to foster a nurturing environment for a child's holistic development.

Through workshops, seminars, and additional certifications, I've expanded my knowledge in areas such as child development, curriculum planning, and inclusive practices. These opportunities for professional growth have not only enriched my practice but have also empowered me to advocate for better support in my community. I am grateful for every experience I have had throughout my journey as an educator and caregiver, they have shaped me and provide me with excitement with possibility of the future.
